ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

This Week we are honoring the entire Mount
Carmel Girls Tennis team.

Mt. Carmel Girls Tennis is the division 2
champion, the first tennis ever championship at
MC in all of their 33 yrs!  Mt. Carmel defeated
Westview 11-7 in a very good match.  Sabby
Leon-Chao swept her three singles as did Bella
Genkina.  Melanie Corbin and Alyssa Paraiso
swept their three doubles and Sharon Reibstein
and Amrita Rao added two victories in doubles.
Stephanie Hara in singles and Karen Truoung
and Karen Korico in doubles rounded out the
team and played very competitively throughout
the day.  In the end the MC Girls were up to the
task and kept their noses in front the whole
match, with three doubles on the court and one
singles match still going, Mount Carmel had
clinched the match with the last two wins by
Bella Genkina and Sabby Leon Chao.

Mt. Carmel defeated West Hills 15-3 in the
quarterfinals of the division 2 playoffs this past
Thursday.  West Hills entered the contest with a
12-3 record for the season but were no match
for the Sundevils who are now 12-4 for the
season.

In the Semi-Finals this past Friday, MC
defeated Vahalla.  Vahalla had excellent singles
players and decent doubles teams, they were
18-2 and undefeated in their league (10-0).
Final Scores was Mt Carmel 12, Vahalla 6.

MC's top three players all year were Sebastiani
Leon-Chao, a sophomore sensation who won
all three sets without dropping a game against
West Hills to go to 40-8 for the season,
combined with her one doubles appearance
and she is 42-9.  Bella Genkina, the freshman
powerhouse who won her two singles against
West Hills, giving up only 1 game.  She was
subbed out for her third set because at that
point MC had already clinched the match.  She
is 40-6 in singles and with her one doubles
appearance this year she goes to 43-6.
Sharon Reibstein, another powerhouse and
transfer from Westview, is 28-4 in singles for
the Lady Sundevils this year, combined with
Amrita Rao to win three doubles matches
against West Hills to take her year to date
record to 31-4.

For the year this triple threat trio is 108-18 in
singles and 8-1 in doubles for a combined
116-19 record!  Consider that MC plays in the
ever tough Palomar League against perennial
powerhouses Torrey Pines, Rancho Bernardo,
La Costa Canyon, Poway and Westview , and
the records are even more amazing.  Out of
conference MC went 7-0 against division 1
teams from North County, including  Rancho
Buena Vista, Vista, Carlsbad , El Camino ,
Oceanside and a tough division 3 team in
Cathedral Catholic.

Sabby,  Bella and Sharon have just been
outstanding all year and they all return next
season for the Sundevils.  They are very
versatile players who could do just as well in
doubles for us but it is nice to have this trio
playing singles for us.  Bella and Sharon are
going to play doubles in the individual Palomar
League Tournament which starts Tuesday at
Rancho Bernardo High.  Sabby will play singles
in that event, and the week after it's possible all
three will and should be in the CIF individual
tournament.

Against West Hills the doubles teams for Mount
Carmel,  Alyssa Paraiso and Melanie Corbin;
Amrita Rao and Sharon Reibstein; and Karen
Torico and Karen Truong,  all swept their
doubles matches to cement the win.

The CIF finals will be Monday at 1pm at the
Barnes Center, the third meeting this year
between the teams.  Mt. Carmel won the first
two meetings, but the third will surely be the
toughest.  Good luck girls, and do your best to
bring home a trophy!
