| ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (click here for past winners) Wendy Dorr, Shannon Thomas, Robert Davis, and Jacob Wood share this week's athlete of the week award. The above quartet received the PE Awards for the 8th grade students at Black Mountain Middle School. They were selected for their outstanding efforts over the course of the year at the school. Below is the text of what was said at this year's award ceremony by Leslie Olson, BMMS P.E. teacher and presenter of the awards. "The PE department is unique in many ways, one being, we see all of the students. We want to thank all of you who suited up and did your job every day. Our ability to teach over 50 students at time depends on your Raider Pride. Now for the awards. Robert Davis, our boy PE student of the year is one of those quiet gentlemen who is so humble, one might miss his tremendous athletic talent. He is by far the strongest student at Black Mountain. Robert is a classic natural athlete who plans on joining the Sundevil football and wrestling teams and running track. His work ethic, ability to help and motivate others will make him invaluable to the Mt. Carmel athletic program. What was Jacob’s time? Every Tuesday I was asked that question after the run because Jacob Wood, our boy athlete of the year, is the man to beat – and no one did. Jacob, a Sundevil, is the most natural runner I have seen at Black Mountain. Jacob plans to run cross-country, play soccer and choose between baseball and track. With his talent and positive attitude, he will be successful in high school. Now, if he would just wear a new hat – perhaps a Mt. Carmel hat? Wendy Dorr, our girl athlete of the year, is an all around athlete whose chosen sport is water polo – a sport that requires more than tremendous swimming ability. Wendy has the physical strength, mental toughness and quick thinking required to play Mount Carmel water polo. That makes her a good player, but she is outstanding because she is not only a leader, she unites people. You can tell by her wonderfully friendly outlook and smile. Shannon Thomas, our girl PE student of the year, is a multi- talented young lady who is intelligent, athletic, and has a beautiful singing voice. Her willingness to help and be fair has stood out all year. Shannon has the wonderful combination of talent, work ethic, leadership and a competitive spirit. Shannon plans on playing Westview soccer. Her speed and magic feet will be welcomed on their field. The PE department is proud to recognize Robert, Jacob, Shannon and Wendy for their achievements." |
