ATHLETE OF THE
WEEK

This week PQ Sports is honoring
as athlete of the week the PQ
Premier GU14 Red, as they
were a finalist in the Open State
Cup Championship 2007.

What a fantastic season this
team has had!  They finished
Presidio League Play in 2nd
place.  They advanced to
Premier for the next season
winning the Premier Cup
Tournament game against Spirit.
And finally, ended their run in
Open State Cup finishing in 2nd
place out of 66 teams.

Throughout the season these
young ladies showed versatility,
perseverance, and composure
through all the obstacles and
challenges they faced.  In the
end, some spectacular soccer
was played and the season
ended with a trip to the
Championship Game in Open
State Cup Finals.

In bracket play of State Cup, PQ
Premier GU14 Red managed to
advance with an 11the place
wild card position beating BRM
Rebels (1-0) and Real Cal FC
Black (1-0) and losing to
Dessert United (0-2).  Little did
we know this team would then
decide to come out and play
some great soccer the next few
weekends.

Round of 32
PQ Premier GU14 Red played
against SCU Orange and won
2--0 while dominating the game.

Round of 16
Met up with Bakersfield United
Premier and PQ Premier GU14
Red scored a goal with 51
seconds left in regulation play
advancing the team to the round
of the Elite 8.

Round of 8
With strong winds and a tough
game ahead against Arensal FC
White, PQ Premier GU14 Red
held strong to end regulation
play in 0-0 tie.  In overtime (2
ten-minute periods), a goal is
scored in last few seconds of the
first 10-minute overtime.  With
renewed energy, the players
held strong for the next 10
minutes against the wind and
going uphill to hold off Arsenal
to win 1-0 and advance to the
Final Four.

Round of 4
The semi-final game against
South Bay Soccer Club was
exciting.  Right before the half,
South Bay scored a goal going
up 1-0.  Having the advantage
of downhill and wind on their
backs, PQ Premier GU14 began
the second half and about 15
minutes in, PQ Premier GU14
Red scored a goal with a little
assistance from the wind.  About
5 minutes later, after an
awesome passing sequence the
ball is put between the posts for
another goal.  From that point
on, PQ Premier GU14 Red
dominated with strong pressure
and composed play to win the
game 2-1 and move into the
finals.

Finals
The finals placed PQ Premier
GU14 Red against Southwest
Soccer Club GU14 Elite for an
exciting game of soccer.  SW
Soccer Club scored right before
the end of the first half.  Starting
the second half PQ Premier
GU14 Red came out strong and
about 15 minutes in scored a
goal.  Not much later SW Soccer
Club scored their 2nd goal to go
up 2-1.  For the remainder of
the game PQ Premier GU14 Red
dominated play and had
numerous shot attempts at goal,
2 hitting the post, to fall short in
the end to finish in 2nd place for
State Cup.

These young ladies showed
great sportsmanship,
outstanding effort, strong
defensive and phenomenal
passing to play some very
exciting soccer through the
State Cup run to the
Championship game.  They
definitely kept the parents on
the edge of their seats!  It has
been a remarkable and
memorable season for these
young ladies.  Congratulations
on a job well done!
