| ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (click here for past winners) This week PQ Sports is honoring as athlete of the week the PQ Premier GU14 Red, as they were a finalist in the Open State Cup Championship 2007. What a fantastic season this team has had! They finished Presidio League Play in 2nd place. They advanced to Premier for the next season winning the Premier Cup Tournament game against Spirit. And finally, ended their run in Open State Cup finishing in 2nd place out of 66 teams. Throughout the season these young ladies showed versatility, perseverance, and composure through all the obstacles and challenges they faced. In the end, some spectacular soccer was played and the season ended with a trip to the Championship Game in Open State Cup Finals. In bracket play of State Cup, PQ Premier GU14 Red managed to advance with an 11the place wild card position beating BRM Rebels (1-0) and Real Cal FC Black (1-0) and losing to Dessert United (0-2). Little did we know this team would then decide to come out and play some great soccer the next few weekends. Round of 32 PQ Premier GU14 Red played against SCU Orange and won 2--0 while dominating the game. Round of 16 Met up with Bakersfield United Premier and PQ Premier GU14 Red scored a goal with 51 seconds left in regulation play advancing the team to the round of the Elite 8. Round of 8 With strong winds and a tough game ahead against Arensal FC White, PQ Premier GU14 Red held strong to end regulation play in 0-0 tie. In overtime (2 ten-minute periods), a goal is scored in last few seconds of the first 10-minute overtime. With renewed energy, the players held strong for the next 10 minutes against the wind and going uphill to hold off Arsenal to win 1-0 and advance to the Final Four. Round of 4 The semi-final game against South Bay Soccer Club was exciting. Right before the half, South Bay scored a goal going up 1-0. Having the advantage of downhill and wind on their backs, PQ Premier GU14 began the second half and about 15 minutes in, PQ Premier GU14 Red scored a goal with a little assistance from the wind. About 5 minutes later, after an awesome passing sequence the ball is put between the posts for another goal. From that point on, PQ Premier GU14 Red dominated with strong pressure and composed play to win the game 2-1 and move into the finals. Finals The finals placed PQ Premier GU14 Red against Southwest Soccer Club GU14 Elite for an exciting game of soccer. SW Soccer Club scored right before the end of the first half. Starting the second half PQ Premier GU14 Red came out strong and about 15 minutes in scored a goal. Not much later SW Soccer Club scored their 2nd goal to go up 2-1. For the remainder of the game PQ Premier GU14 Red dominated play and had numerous shot attempts at goal, 2 hitting the post, to fall short in the end to finish in 2nd place for State Cup. These young ladies showed great sportsmanship, outstanding effort, strong defensive and phenomenal passing to play some very exciting soccer through the State Cup run to the Championship game. They definitely kept the parents on the edge of their seats! It has been a remarkable and memorable season for these young ladies. Congratulations on a job well done!
